Is your Home Designed for Life? NPB Design Studio's Approach to Aging in Place

Aging in place, the concept of living in your own home safely and independently as you grow older is a dream many of us share. However, as statistics show, there's often a gap between the intention to age in place and the actual preparations made for it. At NPB Design Studio, we not only understand the importance of this dream but also have personal experience with the challenges it entails. Our lead designer, Noura Bishay, has spent her entire life with a mobility-challenged family member, giving her a unique and intimate understanding of what it truly means to design spaces that support independent living through every stage of life.

The Reality of Aging in Place: Studies reveal a significant disparity between those who hope to age in place and those who are adequately prepared for it. According to the AARP in 2021, if given the choice, 77% of adults over 50 would prefer to age in place and only a fraction of them have taken the necessary steps to make this a reality. According to choicemutual.com , Only 10% of homes are “aging ready” to accommodate older adults. This discrepancy highlights the need for thoughtful and purposeful design solutions that cater to the evolving needs of individuals and their families. It costs more when you need to add ramps on the day of the emergency, or when you realize that one step can isolate you, or even when you can’t enter your bathroom because the door is narrow.
